Louise Goode and Lara Kaput interview Carmel O’Brien, Counselling Psychologist and domestic violence specialist, and Lily, ex Jehovah's Witness, survivor of familial terrorism and advocate for other domestic violence survivors.
Lily uses her own experineces to help identify domestic violence, especially non physcial violence. Carmel discusses practical strategies for escaping both mentally and physically from familial violence, and Louise and Lara discuss the additional complications for Jehovah's Witnesses who are trained to accept domestic violence and actively hindered from escaping.
Carmel O’Brien is a Counselling Psychologist and national convenor of the APS Women and Psychology Interest Group. For the last 23 years she has worked predominantly with people who have lived with violence at home. This includes working in child protection services, the Victorian Women’s Prison, in critical incident management and relationship and general counselling practice.
